Homemade peppermint lip balm with coconut oil

Cold weather always makes my lips dry and broken. This homemade lip balm is just perfect, it’s yummy and good on the lips. It is 100% natural and chemical free and have moisturizing and healing abilities.  All that you need to get started are a few ingredients and some very basic kitchen equipment. You will also need some sort of vessel for holding your finished balm. You can also easily re-purpose previously used glass or metal lip balm containers or you can buy new cans or jars if you want to make them for gifts.

I’ve always felt that the best part of making your own body-care products is the ability to customize them to your fragrance preferences. Lip balm is no exception. In the recipe provided below, feel free to add any essential oil or combination of your choice. If minty freshness is your thing, go for peppermint or spearmint essential oil. If you prefer a floral fragrance, consider a few drops of lavender (which naturally contains antiviral, antiseptic and antibacterial properties, perfect for healing lip infections and keeping others at bay). Want something spicier add cinnamon or clove essential oil. There really is no wrong way to go about scenting your balm.

You can buy lip palm containers from craft stores or order online. I order my bottles containers and jars from here.

ingredients:

  • 2 tbsp. natural beeswax, grated
  • 4 tbsp. coconut oil
  • 5–10 drops essential oil of choice

Recipe:

  1. Place oil and beeswax in a double boiler (or heatproof bowl resting on top of a small pot of simmering water). Heat gently until everything has melted.
  2. Remove mixture from heat, and add peppermint oil. Stir until blended.
  3. Place the pan or bowl in a larger bowl full of cold water. Stir quickly until the mixture begins to change in consistency (it will become thicker).
  4. Pour mixture into containers, place covers on, and let sit to cool and set up. Mixture will be solid at room temperature.
