I love using dry shampoo since I am not washing my hair every day anymore, but I don’t want all those chemicals! I’ve been using cocoa powder, potato starch and baking soda as my homemade dry shampoo for some time now. Cocoa helps to blend in better with my darker hair. I like it because it can help cut down on the “greasy” smell hair can get after a couple of days. Special bonus with this one is smelling like chocolate. 😉 This homemade dry shampoo recipe is a great substitute for chemical filled expensive aerosol versions. It is cheaper, all natural and chemical free. How great is that! 😛 And it gives thin, straight hair great texture – it ends up feeling thicker! Also it darkens your hair a little.
I have ordered essential oils from online store and when they arrive I will try with few drops of peppermint or lemongrass essential oils and let you know how it works. 😉
I have dark hair, so this is my go-to recipe. You can add more or less cocoa powder as needed. I use two tablespoons every time. If you have light hair just skip the cocoa.
- 2 tablespoons potato starch
- 2 tablespoons baking soda
- 2 tablespoons raw unsweetened cocoa powder
Combine the potato starch, cocoa and baking soda in a container and shake. And thats it! 😛 As long as you keep it sealed and dry, you can store it in the bathroom without any problems 😉 I keep one bigger jar in bathroom for home use and one smaller jar in my make-up bag for quick use whenever needed.
I use brush to apply my dry shampoo, this way I don’t have to get cocoa on my hands, specially if you are using it outside of the home. If yo don’t have a brush, shake a small amount of dry shampoo on your hands, rub together and and pat the areas of your hair that you’d like to look cleaner. Brush if you still see any spots of dry shampoo. And you’re done! Enjoy! 😀
